Our Moving-to-Portugal Diary — Part 4: Preparing to Move
Shipping, Packing, Paperwork & the Emotional Side of Leaving
At this stage, nothing feels final and yet everything feels very real.
We haven’t fully moved to Portugal yet.
We’re still going back and forth, dividing our time between two places, two routines, two versions of life.
But January is approaching, and with it comes the moment where preparation quietly turns into departure.
This part of the journey isn’t the most glamorous.
There are no dreamy neighborhood walks or café mornings here.
Instead, it’s boxes, documents, lists and emotions that don’t always fit neatly into any plan.

Shipping & Packing: Deciding What a Life Is Made Of
Packing sounds practical, but it’s surprisingly emotional.
Every item forces a decision:
Do we ship this?
Do we store it?
Do we let it go?
You start realizing how much a home isn’t just furniture or objects , it’s habits, memories, and things you never thought about until you had to choose whether they deserve space in your future life.
We’re trying to pack intentionally:
-
only what truly matters
-
only what we’ll realistically use
-
only what feels worth carrying forward
It’s not about minimalism for the sake of it , it’s about clarity.
Paperwork: The Quiet Backbone of the Move
While boxes pile up, paperwork quietly holds everything together.
Documents, contracts, copies, scans, confirmations , some physical, some digital, all essential.
It’s the unglamorous part of relocating, but without it, nothing moves forward.
We’ve learned to double-check everything, keep both digital and printed versions, and stay organized even when the process feels repetitive or slow.
Preparation here doesn’t feel exciting but it brings peace of mind.

Living Between Two Places
Right now, we’re not fully “here” or “there.”
We’re visiting Portugal, coming back, finishing tasks, saying “see you soon” instead of “goodbye.”
There’s a strange in-between feeling — like life is already shifting, even before the official move happens.
It’s exciting, but also disorienting.
You start mentally detaching from one place while not fully rooted in the next yet.

The Emotional Side No One Talks About Enough
This stage brings emotions we didn’t fully expect.
Not fear — but reflection.
Not doubt — but awareness.
Leaving a familiar life behind isn’t dramatic.
It’s quiet.
It shows up in small moments, like realizing this might be the last time you do something in a certain way, or visit a place without knowing when you’ll be back.
There’s gratitude for what was, excitement for what’s coming — and space for both to exist at the same time.

Looking Ahead
This phase doesn’t come with clear endings.
We’re still preparing, still organizing, still moving between what was and what’s coming next.
January is approaching, but for now, we’re allowing this moment to unfold slowly — one box, one document, one emotion at a time.
👉 Coming next: The first days after the move — written once this chapter becomes real life, not just preparation.
