Our Moving to Portugal Diary — Part 1: Why We Decided to Move

In Part 1 of our Moving-to-Portugal Diary, we share the personal story behind why we chose Portugal , our desire for slow living, peace, and a fresh start.

Introduction: Every Big Move Starts With a Quiet Thought

Moving to another country rarely begins with a dramatic moment.
It starts with a whisper , a small, persistent feeling that your life could be different… softer… slower… truer to who you are becoming.

For us, that whisper eventually grew into a decision:
We were going to start a new life in Portugal.

This is the beginning of our journey.

Welcome to Part 1 of our Moving-to-Portugal Diary.

🇵🇹 Why Portugal? The Decision Behind the Move

1. We Wanted a Life That Felt Peaceful , Not Rushed

Modern life has a way of speeding up without asking permission.
Deadlines, traffic, noise, stress, the constant pressure to do more and be more,  it all builds up quietly.

We realized we were living in “survival mode” instead of “living mode.”

Portugal offered something we deeply needed:
a slower, calmer rhythm where the days feel full, not frantic.

The culture values balance over busyness, moments over milestones, community over competition. That alone felt like a breath of fresh air.

2. We Wanted a Place That Aligned With Our Values

The more we traveled, the more we understood what mattered to us:

  • safety

  • kindness

  • community

  • nature

  • good food

  • meaningful routines

  • a lifestyle that doesn’t drain your energy

Portugal checked every box.

It offered a safer environment, a warm culture, endless natural beauty, and an atmosphere where people genuinely care about quality of life, not just productivity.

3. We Wanted to Build a Future , Not Just Maintain the Present

After years of repeating the same routine, we felt stuck.
Not unhappy, just unfulfilled.

We wanted to grow, evolve, explore, challenge ourselves.
We wanted a fresh chapter that allowed us to reinvent our habits, our routines, and even our sense of self.

Portugal gave us the opportunity to do exactly that.
A clean slate.
A new beginning.
A chance to shape the future intentionally, instead of simply letting life happen.

4. We Wanted Space ; Physically and Mentally

Sometimes the mind feels crowded, even in a familiar environment.
Moving abroad creates distance — from old patterns, old expectations, old versions of yourself.

That distance allows clarity.

Portugal offered us space:
space to breathe,
space to think,
space to simply be.

5. We Wanted a Home That Felt Like Us

There’s a moment you realize you’ve outgrown the life you’re living.
When comfort becomes constraint.
When familiarity stops being enough.

We wanted a home that matched the life we dreamed of , filled with sunlight, warmth, creativity, and meaning.

Portugal felt right.
It felt like the place where our next chapter should begin.

🌿 The Moment the Decision Became Real

For months, Portugal lived in our minds as an idea , a possibility.
Then, one day, it shifted from a dream into a decision.
We began researching visas, neighborhoods, cost of living, and the logistics of moving.

And suddenly, it wasn’t “maybe one day” anymore.
It was:
“We’re doing this.”

Part 1 Summary: A Decision Made From the Heart

We didn’t choose Portugal on impulse.
We chose it slowly, carefully, and intentionally — because it aligned with the life we wanted to build:

  • peaceful

  • meaningful

  • warm

  • slow

  • balanced

  • full of possibility

This diary is our way of sharing that journey , not just the logistics, but the emotions, the realizations, and the transformation that comes with starting over.
