Starting a New Chapter: Our Journey to Portugal with the D7 and D8 Visas

Making the decision to move abroad is never simple, but for us, it became an exciting turning point—one filled with dreams, growth, and the promise of a new beginning. In April 2025, we applied for Portugal’s D7 and D8 visas, and on October 16, 2025, our process officially became real when we submitted our passports to the consulate. That moment marked the start of our countdown to a completely new life in Portugal.

Living the “Honeymoon Phase” of Immigration

Every immigrant experiences the five stages of migration:
honeymoon, anxiety, struggle, adjustment, and adaptation.
Right now, we are definitely in the honeymoon stage—excited, motivated, and imagining all the beautiful possibilities ahead.

But unlike many, this move is not an escape for us. It’s a step toward growth, a chance to experience life differently, to challenge ourselves, and to rebuild our routines in a new environment.

A Family Decision Shaped by Change

One of the biggest reasons behind this move was our 18-year-old son, who will begin studying abroad next year. Even though the plan is exciting, it also means we will spend 3–4 months apart during his final high school exams in April and May.

This may be the phase where I experience the “anxiety” stage of immigration. Being away from him will not be easy, but I’m hopeful that I can obtain special permission from AIMA to be with him when needed. Until then, I am choosing to focus on solutions, not fear.

A Chance to Rediscover Myself

Moving to Portugal feels like a door opening—not only to a new country but to a new version of myself. I hope this journey helps me reconnect with the parts of me I’ve forgotten, the emotions I’ve suppressed, the talents I haven’t fully used, and maybe even hobbies I have yet to discover.

I’m ready to learn a new language, build a social circle step by step, and embrace the challenges that come with starting over. Most of all, I’m excited about who I will become through this experience.

Immigration brings uncertainty, but it also brings opportunity. As we prepare for our move to Portugal, I choose to see every stage—honeymoon, anxiety, struggle, adjustment, and adaptation—as part of a meaningful transformation.

This isn’t just a relocation.
It’s a rebirth, a renewal, and a chance to build a life aligned with who we truly want to be.
